VOCÊ NA A GENTE IN THE SPOKEN PORTUGUESE OF VITÓRIA DA CONQUISTA: A SOCIOFUNCIONALISTIC ANALYSIS OF INDETERMINACY OF THE SUBJECT

ABSTRACT
The present work is the result of a study that has as primary objective to investigate the way in which the indetermination of the subject happens through the grammaticalized forms você and a gente in the Formal and Popular Portuguese spoken of Vitoria da Conquista - BA. We intend here to broaden the approach to the phenomenon under study by establishing a direct relation between the process of change through grammaticalization by which the forms você and a gente have passed and the function of indeterminating the subject that both acquired, considering the influence of linguistic variables (text superstructure, change or maintenance of referent and verbal tense) and extra linguistic (gender, age group and schooling level) in the process of choosing from the speaker by any of the above indeterminate forms. In order to fulfill these goals, we are anchored in the orientation of sociofunctionalist research, which results from the junction of theoretical and methodological assumptions of two linguistic currents: Sociolinguistics and North American Functionalism and, thus, Sociofunctionalism. The sample used is composed by 24 interviews extracted from the corpora of Portuguese spoken of Vitória da Conquista -BA (corpora PPVC and PCVC) and the data located underwent by probabilistic statistical analysis through the program GoldVarb X. In the process of analysis, 1261 occurrences of both forms in subject position were located, 637 of them being of indeterminate subject. The results obtained from the analysis of these data allowed us to infer that (i) both você and a gente act as strategies of indeterminacy of the subject in the spoken Portuguese of Vitoria da Conquista - BA; (ii) this act is influenced by linguistic and social factors; (iii) there are specific contexts in which the indeterminating function is used and others, also specific, in which the prototypical function of forms prevails; (iv) the indeterminate function, common to both forms, is a result of the grammaticalization process they have gone through, since we observe a relationship between the principles acting as semantic decategorization and persistence (typical of the change through grammaticalization) and an innovative function aggregated to the two forms, evidencing the parallel between grammaticalization and indetermination.
