A SOCIOFUNCTIONALIST STUDY OF THE VERB TO ARRIVE IN THE PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE: ABSTRATIZATION WITHIN AND OUTSIDE OF PERIPRASTIC STRUCTURES

ABSTRACT
This work aims to present the course of the verb to arrive on the grammaticalization way in the Portuguese language spoken in Brazil (PB) and, specifically, in the conquistence vernacular. Initially, we have assumed that this verb traces a path of using [+ concrete]> [+ abstract] in periphrases of type [V1 (e) + V2], where V1 is the auxiliary verb and V2 is the main verb. We have observed from the data used that the way of the verb to arrive the abstraction occurs both inside and outside verbal periphrases, and for the first modality, there is the auxiliary item that brings the item even closer to a possible linguistic change. In order to do so, we delineate a pathway, of a pancronic character for the item under study, starting from its etymological origin and diverse dictionaries, observing the records in historical, prescriptive and descriptive grammars, and then constructing our theoretical foundation based on the linguistic studies, in a line that goes from the linguistic tradition to the most recent studies about the variation and linguistic change through the process of grammaticalization. Our research is based on the North American Functionalism, which considers the language in real communication situations. We choose as linguistic variables: i. verbal mode; ii. relations of meaning; iii. type of prayer; iv. nature of the speaker's evaluation and as extralinguistic variables: v. sex; vii. age group; vii. schooling. This is done, we pass the analysis of the data and we to present the quantitative results through the use of the Goldvarb x program. The sample used was composed of 48 interviews extracted from two corpora orals, the Corpus of the Popular Portuguese of Vitória da Conquista city (Corpus PPVC) and the Corpus of the cult Portuguese of Vitória da Conquista (Corpus PCVC). The interviews were selected according to three age groups, (a) range I - from 15 to 25 years; (b) range II - from 26 years to 50 years; (c) range III - from 50 years onwards, and respecting the following specifications: 24 interviews of male informants and 24 of female informants. The data revealed 342 occurrences with the verb to arrive, of which 78.5% was of the word outside the verbal periphrases, but with an abstraction level of 0.7%, and 21.5% was of the same item within structures of type [V1 (e) + V2 ], which reaches 47.7% of abstraction and exerts an auxiliary function of V2. The data reveal, therefore, the straightforward process of expansion and fixation of this type of structure, as well as, of grammaticalization of the verb to arrive.
