HAPLOLOGY ACCORDING TO OPTIMALITY THEORY ACCORDING TO PERCEPTION OF NATIVE SPEAKER

ABSTRACT
In Portuguese, as in any natural language, phonological processes are common in morphological operations of word formation. In this study, we will show how the phenomenon of haplology - disappearance of similar or identical contiguous segments or syllables - is quite common in composition processes with loss of phonetic material, portmanteau - overlap between two bases, as in sacolé (saco + picolé). This overlap offers possibility for the occurrence of haplology: the syllable [ko] in both bases, which merges from this amalgamation. In view of this, we ask ourselves: what is the functioning of haplology in the process of word formation of the present Portuguese, that is, in the formation of newly created words? We try to understand the motivations of the disappearance of the phonetic material, analyzing their phonological motivations, as well as the nature of this disappearance: if fusion, that is, partial elimination; or deletion, effective deletion. Our hypothesis is that in Brazilian Portuguese, haplology may be either of the type of fusion or deletion. A further case will be determined by the number of syllables of the bases involved in the formation of the compound. For analysis, we describe the portmanteau process with the application of haplology through the Optimality Theory (PRINCE; SMOLENSKY, 1993) to analyze the data and the Correspondence Theory (MCCARTHY; PRINCE, 1995) to better understand the interface between morphology and the Phonology. In addition, we investigated the level of acceptability of haplology in real words and logatomas and verified the productivity of haplology in the process of word formation in experimental situations through perception. We note that from the OT the syllabic balance between the bases denotes a prevalence in the process as portmanteau, the application of haplology still occurs and the phonological phenomenon can be understood under two natures: fusion or erasure. In addition, the experiments indicated that the application of haplology in the process has a high index of acceptability by the speakers and that it will be the syllable balancing that will prevail in the contiguity of equal segments or syllables.
