SYNTAX AND STYLE IN VIEIRA: A LOOK AT THE CLITIC CLIMBING

ABSTRACT
Our objective with this work was to realize a descriptive study of the clitic climbing in the Sermons of Priest António Vieira, observing the relationship between Syntax and Style, under a generative theoretical perspective. Andrade (2010) interprets the phenomenon of the clitic climbing (scrambling), from syntactic factors. In the results found by the author, considering the constructions of “restructuring”: structures involving auxiliary or semi-auxiliary verbs (especially those with modal or aspectual value) and a lexical verb in a non-finite form; and “clause union”: constructions involving the causative (or perceptive) verbs and a verb in the uninflected infinitive, the great variation between the texts makes it difficult to identify the change. The fact that this phenomenon is not categorical in Classical Portuguese (ClP) take us to consider the possibility of the existence of informational order restrictions acting on the climbing / non-climbing variation. Galves (2003) interprets the clitic placement in Priest Vieira's sermons as a stylistic resource of the author, and observes that the high frequency of enclisis, contrary to the proclitic pattern of the time is justified by the style of the work, marked by baroque oratory, in which contrastive topics are common. For this reason, the author does not interpret the enclisis in the Sermons de Vieira as a grammatical track of the emergence of a new grammar, in the gerativist sense of the term. According to Galves (2003), the special use of enclisis in the Sermons is made possible by a grammar in which proclisis is the unmarked pattern and the enclisis a phenomenon associated with the restrictions of the syntax / prosody interface, a condition favored by the author's style in the work cited above. Following the reflection and analysis of Galves for the use of the enclisis in the Sermons, we verified the relation between the placement of the pronoun and its elevated and non-elevated position, the syntactic context and the informational structure in the climbing and non climbing data attested in the Sermons of Vieira. The edition of the Sermons of Priest António Vieira that we use in the research is the worked, compiled and syntactically annotated version of the Portuguese Corpus of Portuguese Tycho Brahe. For search the data, we use the Corpus Search tool. The first results of the research, related to the amount of clitic climbing contexts found in the Sermons, point to the fact that the clitic climbing phenomenon is sensitive to the informational content of the sentence and, consequently, to the discursive factors.
