READING AND WRITING: A PROSODIC ANALYSIS OF RADUAN NASSAR'S NOVELS

ABSTRACT
The aim of this dissertation was to make a prosodic analyses of Raduan Nassar’s novels Um copo de cólera and Lavoura arcaica. As a basis to our analyses, we assume that: 1) the reader acts as a listener when reading literary works; 2) the text gives the reader clues so that he can recover prosodic aspects of speech such as voice quality, intonation and the rate of speaking. To reach our goals, we approached the novels in two ways. The first was to make a description of both novels, in which we verified the strategies applied by the author to build up the rhythm. The second was to make an acoustic analysis of the data recorded (the data consisted of recordings of three subjects reading aloud a selected passage from one of the books). To describe the novels, we researched the reviews published on the author. We also looked into the works of Genette (1985) and Wood (2001), authors that present the structure of the genre. We then took as reference the work of Cagliari (2002), to identify the texts’ prosodic markers. In our acoustic analysis, we studied the following parameters: pauses, lengthening of the final stressed syllable and melodic curves. To notate pauses and syllable duration, we used the software Praat. We evaluated whether the pauses and syllable durations were correlated with the prosodic markers which set their boundaries. We also used the Praat to establish the boundaries between intonational contours. The analysis of the curves was made based on two references: Nespor and Vogel’s Prosodic Phonology (1986/2007) and Pierrehumbert’s autossegmental approach (1980).Our results showed the presence of the following prosodic markers in both novels: unusual paragraphing, chapter division and the use of graphic markers. The reading strategies, however, varied according to the participants. The text breaking into smaller parts (intonational phrases) was made by the subjects’ manipulation of the pauses, syllable duration and intonation. The importance of each one of these factors, however, was associated with each reader’s style of reading.
