Abstract

ABSTRACT
The coarticulation is a common phenomenon in all languages, it is peculiar to the speech and presents distinctive features among different ways of speech (ÖHMAN, 1967 and FARNETANI, 1997 apud OLIVEIRA, 2000). However the phenomenon has not been the
target of many studies yet. On the other hand, the speech perception is a complex field in phonetic/phonological studies. It aims to understand the acoustic and articulatory mechanisms whereby we are able to perceive the sounds. This work intends to investigate therefore the effect of the coarticulation manipulation in the perception of obstruent consonants and the vowels [a], [i], [u] in Brazilian Portuguese. For this purpose, we manipulate the monosyllabic acoustic signal formed by these segments, in a syllabic structure CV, in three experimental conditions which were submitted to identification and perception discrimination tests. The
identification tests results pointed out that fricative consonants are easier noticed than plosives when the acoustic signal is manipulated. Also for the discrimination test, the results pointed out that, depending on the experimental condition, the judges can or cannot be sensible to the coarticulation effect in perception.
