INVESTIGATION ON THE PERCEPTION OF VOCALIC NASALIZATION IN BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE

ABSTRACT
This paper aims to investigate which part of a nasal vowel is responsible for triggering the process of perceiving its nasality in Brazilian Portuguese as well as evaluate whether or not the subsequent consonante interferes in this process. In order to accomplish the proposed task, the acoustic signal was recorded in a corpus composed of 58 words with a CVCCV syllabic structure in which the vowels /a/, /i/ and /u/ occupy the syllabic nucleus of the the first syllable while the onset position of the second syllable is occupied by obstruent consonants. Subsequently, the signal was manipulated and the nasal vowels /aN/, /iN/ and /uN/ were divided in three parts: initial, medial and final. The results showed that dividing the vowel in three parts may or may not alter the perception of the nasality depending on the consonant that follows the vowel, what reinforces the complexity of the phenomena. When followed by a plosive or fricative consonant, the vowel /a/, in all of the three parts in which it has been divided, did not show any loss of its nasal sound. In the other hand, the nasal sound of the vowel /iN/ could not be recovered, in any of the three parts in which it has been divided, when followed by voiceless bilabial plosive consonant or by a palatal alveolar fricative consonant. The vowel /uN/, when followed by velar plosive and sound bilabial consonants, showed a recovering of its nasal sound in all of the three parts in which it has been divided.
