THE USE OF PERIPHRASTIC FUTURE WITH THE VERB TO GO IN ORAL AND WRITTEN PORTUGUESE IN VITORIA DA CONQUISTA

ABSTRACT
In this study, we aim to investigate the variants that expressthe future tense, focusing on periphrastic occurrences constituted by the verb to go. For this purpose, we have traced the path from the recognition of the future structure’sorigin, through the Classical and Vulgar Latin, to the discussion established by Grammatical Tradition and linguists. Continuing this path, we have examined the Labovian sociolinguistic studies, which have guided us in the analysis of extra-linguistic (social) variables and the North American functionalism, what allowed us to understand the motivations for the change of our study object. Therefore, we have based our studies on Labov (1994), Sousa (2008), Hopper (1991), Neves (1997) and Martelotta (2012). By taking into consideration the Multisystemic Theory, proposed by Castilho (2004), we have noted the possibility of the multidiretionalityof the studied phenomenon. The data for the research consists of two language forms: written and spoken. In a synchronous level, we have analyzed both forms:speech samples of formal and informal Portuguese spoken in Vitória da Conquista and texts taken from municipal blogs. On the other hand, for the diachronic analysis of the written language, we have chosen a selection of newspapers from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s of the 20th century.Our hypothesis is that the verb to go has been undergoing a process of grammaticalization in both morphosyntactic and semantic levels, which means that it goes from plain verb (meaning displacement) to auxiliary verb (indicating time).Broadly speaking, we have observed the construction of the future tense toward an analytical form and have evidenced in the results a competition between both synthetic and periphrastic forms in journalistic writing and in interviews in which formal Portuguese was spoken. Yet in informal Portuguese, the synthetic structure of the future is barely used.This way, this research aims to contribute to the studies of the future tense and propose to schools a discussion on the usage of various types of structures that perform the function of futurity.
