THE PROSODY IN THE ATTITUDES OF SPEAKERS: THE IRONY CASE

ABSTRACT
This study aimed to investigate how the prosodic parameters behave in the ironic attitude of expression. The study included a spontaneous speech corpus, composed of ironic and neutral statements selected from 9 videos. Chosen as the unit of analysis, the intonation phrase (I) prosodic constituent proposed in prosodic phonology model Nespor and Vogel (1986). Thus, we selected 81 intonational phrases 21 set out in ironic context and intonation 74 sentences of 15 statements in no ironic context. The intonational phrases were analyzed acoustically through frequency parameters, pitch, duration and relative speech rate. For statistical analysis we used the nonparametric Kruskal Wallis test, with 95% confidence. The results revealed that the irony attitude expressions in all contexts showed greater variation in the of prosodic elements related curve of the fundamental frequency, which is related to the melodic variation. The irony attitude was characterized by a higher fundamental frequency (F0) . The F0 values tended to be higher in irony than not ironic. Regarding the tessitura, we find that only the Is ironical video 1 showed significant values, indicating a difference in the level of tessitura. As for the relative duration of syllables observed, we see a pattern of use that indicated a longer duration of prominent syllable of ironical statements than non-ironical. However, no significant difference was that consolidates this observation. What about the speech rate not there were no significant differences, although we have observed that the is were produced with greater speed in irony than not ironic context. Given the above we conclude that the results obtained confirm the existence of a specific melodic contour of irony in the analyzed contexts.
