REPETITION IN ORAL COMMUNICATION: A FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS IN VITÓRIA DA CONQUISTA CORPUS OF FORMAL PORTUGUESE

ABSTRACT
In this research, we investigated a resource that is often used in the orality: the repetition, which is comprehended as a mechanism that helps in the interaction, generating new meanings, in such a way that the resumption occur not only in the formal sphere, but also in the semantic one. For this purpose, we based our research, especially, on the functionalist studies of Ramos (1983), Oliveira (1998), and Castilho (2014); on the postulates of Cognitive Linguistics, presented by Lakoff; Johnson (1998), and Ferrari (2011); and on the studies of Text Linguistics, according to Nóbrega (2011), and Marcuschi (2015). In this work, we aimed at identifying how speakers, who have high schooling level and are from Vitória da Conquista (through the Corpus PCVC, created by the Grupo de Pesquisa em Linguística Histórica e em Sociofuncionalismo), use the repetition in the construction of the spoken text. Basing on the assumption that the repetition is a mechanism so productive in the speech, we analyzed four interviews, considering thirty minutes of each one of them. We catalogued seven micro-structuring functions: the reconstituidora I, the reconstituidora II, the distribuidora, the reforço, the intensificadora, the contraste, and the temporalização; taking into consideration that, in the function distribuidora, there are four sub-functions: the retificação, the paralelização, the enumeração, and the desdobramento. In the qualitative study, we attested that the repetition is an important resource for keeping and conducting the discursive topic, for the cohesion and the argumentative nature of the spoken text, and for the listener’s comprehension. We also attested that, besides being a metaphoric process, the repetition is constituted as a metonymic process, which ocurrs between sub-domains, since they belong to a matrix domain. In conclusion, the repetition is the consequence of the relation between form and function, being, this way, a process that makes possible the organization of the human experience, reaching the textual scope by means of speech acts and producing, cognitively, linguistic structures in layers. This study is relevant, because, besides demonstrating how speakers, who have high schooling level and are from Vitória da Conquista, make use the resource of the repetition in the discursive interaction, it provides a dialogue with several research lines. An important dialogue was between Linguistic Functionalism and Cognitive Linguistics, which corroborated to attest that the repetition is a metonymic process, contributing, this way, to the future researches about the object of study at hand, and cooperating with the formulation of hypotheses and with the dialogue between the results obtained.
