THE ROLE OF CHILD-DIRECTED SPEECH IN THE PHONOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT OF TWIN AND NON-TWIN CHILDREN: THE VOWEL TRIANGLE AND THE EMERGENCE OF TEMPLATES

ABSTRACT
This study, based on the perspective of Complex Adaptive Systems (THELEN; SMITH, 1994), aims to analyze Child-directed Speech (CDS) in the phonological development of twins and singletons, who acquire Brazilian Portuguese (BP) from Vitória da Conquista-BA, We investigated two characteristics of CDS in BP: a) the relationship between CDS and the emergent templates in children's speech; b) the acoustic aspects of the vocalic triangle in the mothers’ speech in the context of CDS and in the context without children. Our hypotheses are that: CDS does not manifest itself in the same frequency and manner in the comparison between speech directed to the non-twin child and the children; CDS plays a direct role in the phonic format of the templates present in children's speech; the speech directed to the child differs acoustically from that of the child. The literature on templates emphasizes the role of articulatory constraints, memory and input in their manifestation. However, although the role of CDS is taken into consideration, there is no specific study on the relationship between CDS and templates, i.e. routines that emerge in the period of lexical expansion. In the same way, we did not find studies that emphasize particularities of the vocalic space of [a], [i] and [u] in Brazilian CDS. With this analysis of the acoustic aspects of the vowel triangle, we sought to highlight the acoustic peculiarities of the CDS in the PB, in order to reinforce its importance with regard to children's phonological development. When comparing the CDS in the interaction with twins(Bg. & Mg) and singleton(L), we did not observe a significant difference in relation to the word frequency as well as the phonological strategies used by adults. There were 902 tokens in the interaction with L., 655 with Bg. and 827 with Mg., so that we understand that CDS is an aspect of the adult's interaction children regardless of whether the child is a twin or not. In relation to the manifestation of templates, we observed that in the total of 36 sessions, templates were found in 22 sessions considering children's speech. However only 3 sessions showed a close relationship between templates used by children and CDS. Concerning the acoustic properties of the vowels [a], [i] and [u], we found that the acoustic properties of CDS speech differ considerably from the speech which is not child directed.
