PHONOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT AND ITS RELATION TO THE INITIAL LEXICON IN THE SPEECH OF TWINS AND NON-TWINS

ABSTRACT
The present study aims to analyze and discuss the relationship between the initial lexicon and the phonological development of twins and singletons acquiring Brazilian Portuguese (BP) spoken in Vitória da Conquista. In this study, the dynamic perspective is assumed (THELEN; SMITH, 1994; DE BOT, LOWIE, VERSPOOR, 2007; LARSEN-FREMAN, 2008) in accordance with the Exemplars approach (BYBEE, 2001; CRISTÓFARO-SILVA, 2003; OLIVEIRA-GUIMARÃES, 2008), which they consider variability and instability in the path of phonological development and the role played by interaction and experience in linguistic representation. It is also necessary to emphasize that the word is understood as the minimal unit of representation in child early phonology. We analyze data of three children: a pair of dizygotic twins, named as Bg. and Mg., and a singleton, named L., three girls. Data were collected longitudinally, in monthly intervals, at the age 1 to 2 years. Data were recorded in videos, with duration of 30 minutes, in spontaneous contexts of speech between the child and his caregivers. In the analysis of the data, we analyzed children’s segmental path, separately, in order to investigate its relation with the emergence of templates (VIHMAN, 2016). The results show that each child takes his own linguistic path although similar patterns are observed as they have a target language. In addition, there is a close relationship between phonological development and the lexicon acquired by the children as well as an overlapping of exemplars in competition. This view offers an alternative explanation for the puzzle-puddle-pickle phenomenon which is not established only by phonological limits. Moreover, we observed that the frequency of tokens and types presented consistent data regarding (dis)use of templates, pointing out to differences in children's data. In general terms, a nonlinear, unstable, variable and gradual path of acquisition was observed.
