INVESTIGATING DISCREPANCY IN THE SILABICAL DEVELOPMENT OF TWO TWIN CHILDREN

ABSTRACT
The present research aims at analyzing and discussing the factors that may influence the discrepancy in the phonological development of two twin children, developing Brazilian Portuguese (BP) from Vitória da Conquista-BA. In addition to characterizing the phonological path by investigating the development of the syllabic constituent due to the lack of studies. For this research, we assume the perspective of the Complex Adaptive Systems - CAS (THELEN; SMITH, 1994; LARSEN-FREMAN, 2008), which points out the interference of external, random, variable and unstable factors in the course of phonological development as well as it takes into consideration the importance of social interaction for language development. The data were collected with a pair of female dizygotic twins, named as Bg and Mg. The naturalistic and longitudinal methodology was used, so the data were collected at monthly intervals, in the period from 1 to 2 years. The data were recorded in 30-minute video sessions, in spontaneous contexts of speech between the child, caregivers and researchers. In the analysis of the data, we describe the syllabic structures of the twins separately. The results show that the most produced syllabic productions were: CV and V, both with regard to babbling and words. The twin Bg presented syllabic structures in the productions of words which were not present in Mg speech. In addition, we observed that Mg had fewer token productions in relation to Bg, but the difference was not statistically significant. Regarding the results of the inventories, the Portage results showed that children were adequately developed in the five developmental areas, and MacArthur-Bates pointed out that the development of both children was within the expected range.
