THE VERBAL CATEGORY IN PORTUGUESE-LIBRAS INTERLANGUAGE: ACQUISITION OF THE WRITING MODALITY OF PORTUGUESE BY DEAF

ABSTRACT
This research aims at investigating the verbal category in the process of writing acquisition in the Portuguese language by the Brazilian deaf and also highlighting the possible obstacles throughout that process. We considering here the spoken form of the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) as the first language (L1) of the deaf and the written form of the Portuguese as the their target language (L2). By means of an analysis-methodology on writing samples of natural language production we have tried to analyze and describe the convergent and non-convergent verbal occurrences with PB which were found in the textual production of deaf students. This was done in order to better understand the acquisition process of writing of oral language by the deaf and also to broaden the perspectives about the grammatical problems in such productions, besides considering possible reflexes of the Libras upon such writings. We conducted that research from three hypotheses: (1) we assume, as Kato (2005), the acquisition of the written form is a process of second order that gives a very similar way to the second language process (L2); (2) we assume, anchored in Selinker (1972), the hypothesis of interlanguage, according to which the interlanguage differs systematically from both the first language as the target language, although it shows inherent properties of both languages; (3) based on the set of features of Cowper (2003), discussed by Freitag (2005), we formulated the hypothesis to order which the imperfect acquisition of the [Event] feature, relative to the Portuguese system, is the main cause of the lack of convergence between the data from the Interlanguage and the Portuguese structure in its writing form. The analysis of written interlanguage data produced by the informants-subjects allowed us to observe the nature of non-convergent grammatical structures with PB frequently found in textual productions of Brazilian deaf learners of Portuguese as L2. We have verified that the grammatical nature of such problems involves from the lexical choice of the verb with more appropriate traits to the composition of the argument structure, with respect to the number of arguments and the categorial selection.
