ANALYSIS OF THE ASPECTS OF SPEECH APRAXIA IN A CHILD WITH DOWN SYNDROME

ABSTRACT
In this dissertation, we present the results of a case study of IZ, a nine-year-old child, which presents the genetic condition of Down syndrome and was diagnosed with apraxia of speech at the six-year-old. Assuming that language is a constitutive activity of the subject and that "it is a work by which, historically, socially and culturally, man organizes and shapes his experiences" (FRANCHI, 1987: 12), we aimed to analyze and monitor longitudinally the functioning of IZ’s language in order to verify if there are any difficulties in the production of speech and, if there is one, the best possibilities of therapeutic intervention (speech and language therapy) for a development and (re)organization of its speech. Our specific goals are: to investigate the functioning of IZ's language, verifying if there are any difficulties in the speech productions presented by the child, in the midst of significant situations of interlocution; to analyze the speech intelligibility level of IZ by means of speech perception tests applied before and after the therapeutic intervention; to verify, through acoustic analysis of speech, if there is production of vocalic and / or consonantal segments in IZ's speech, as well as the production quality of these segments. The theoretical basis of this research is based on the theoretical postulates of Discursive Neurolinguistics that starts from a perspective that considers the subject and its specificities within a context of/in the language functioning; in the apraxia of speech concepts, postulated by Kumin (2006) and Carrara (2016); and in Acoustic Phonology studies, in particular, from the theory of speech production or Source-Filter Theory, in the light of Fant (1960), in order to analyze a data corpus consisting of IZ’s speech productions. From the analysis of this corpus, we verified that IZ presents a speech characterized by low perceptibility and intelligibility; limited production of consonant segments; vowel quality without difficulties in the production of six oral vowels of Brazilian Portuguese (PB) and without production occurrence of two vowels. After these analyzes, we opted for a neurolinguistic intervention based on IZ’s specificities in programming and producing the speech, which brought significant results to the child, helping in the automation, amplification and (re)organization of its speech, as well as in the production of a speech with a better intelligibility, allowing to the child a better social life.
