ACQUISITION OF THE PHRASAL STRUCTURE IN BRAZILIAN SIGN LANGUAGE

ABSTRACT
This dissertation aims to present an analysis of the acquisition of LIBRAS by deaf which had their acquisition processes established in three different contexts: a) natural acquisition in childhood (ANI), taking as input the LIBRAS as a first language (L1) from birth; b) acquisition in the childhood with family listener (IFO), taking as input the LIBRAS of second language speakers (L2), from 4 years old; and c) late acquisition (TA), taking as input the LIBRAS of second language speakers (L2) and his deaf schoolmates, from the 8 years old. The theoretical framework underpinning this study is the Generative Grammar, with its innatist hypothesis of language acquisition. For definition of the linguistic sign of LIBRAS (the signal), we assume the hypothesis of MLMov unit of Lessa-de-Oliveira (2012). The author identifies this unit as an element of the signal articulatory composition. We use the SEL writing system, also developed by Lessa-de-Oliveira (2009 to 2012) in the transcription of data, because we opt for do transcription by direct writing. This methodology of transcription created conditions for an analysis of data nearest the way these data were articulated by the informants. This resource allowed a more detailed analysis of the characteristics of the language, which shows a variety of possible predication related to the three-dimensional articulation condition own of sign languages or related to aspects of a linear sequence, more consistent with what is found in oral languages. We therefore conclude that the argumental structure of LIBRAS uses four process of predication: lexical categories saturation, empty categories saturation, saturation by locators (Locs.) and self-saturation. A comparison of these four types of predication between the three profiles of informants above demonstrates that the difference in quality of the input does not interfere in the acquisition of language as L1. This result reinforces the innatist hypothesis, illustrated by Plato's Problem, because verified that it is possible to acquire a native language from the fragmented, inaccurate and late (after 8, 10 years old) input. But the data puts in question the hypothesis that the critical period of language acquisition would be limited to the 6 years old.
